Eagles' Wings Story

Jerry & Sandra Pike with their son Joey Pike

We would like to invite you to visit us at Eagles’ Wings in Coker, AL. We are a non-profit 501 (C)(3) corporation that was started to fulfill a need in our community. Our son, Joey is medically fragile, and we realized as Joey approached the age of twenty-one there were no programs or services available for him in the area to enhance his continued development. In October of 2005 we set up a meeting with the superintendent of education, special education teachers, legislators, county commissioners, probate judge, parents, churches, and friends. After the meeting we moved forward with everyone’s blessing. For three years we continuously raised awareness and fundraised, then in 2008 we opened Eagles’ Wings in a rented facility in Northport, Alabama with only five adults attending the day program. With the help of the community we were able to purchase 96.44 acres and started construction on a facility in Coker, Alabama. In November of 2013 we moved into our new facility.

We hope you spend some time on our website and that it illustrates the vision we have for Eagles' Wings. There are currently thirty-five individuals with developmental disabilities that attend our Day Habilitation Program. Fourteen of those individuals are working throughout our community through our Small Group Employment Program. Additionally, we have built two beautiful and accessible residential homes that provide a safe environment with critical care staff providing 24/7 assistance for individuals with developmental disabilities. We are now able to help the developmental disabilities population with everyday life skills that are vital to their continued growth. Our future plans include: fourteen additional residential homes, a medical building, a gift shop, a park with walking trails, an activity center with pool for recreational and exercise purposes, and stables that will house horses for our therapeutic riding program.  These opportunities will also be available to the community.

So if your are in the area please stop by for a visit and meet our individuals and staff.

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint."

Eagles Wings program helping those with special needs adjust to adulthood

by Brenda Ladun         Thursday, June 30, 2022

Eagles Wings in Northport is more than simply a group home for those with special needs. It's a place where individuals can learn to hold down a job and receive a paycheck. Sandra and Jerry Pike came up with the idea to have a place in the community where these adults could thrive. Now, the Pikes have introduced growing hydroponic lettuce and are delivering to local restaurants. The lettuce helps sustain the community and also gives opportunity to the individuals so they can earn a paycheck.
